No matter how many new web 2.0 properties that pop-up like Twitter and the like, blogging still remains very popular. When I’m teaching a session and ask students in the class how many of them read blogs, often only a few hands go up. Want to know why? Because blogs are so pervasive that we often read them and don’t know we’re reading them. Most people don’t know enough about blogging to know what a blog is so when you see huge numbers of people who read blogs, these are based on site statistics, not reader polls. Check out some of these stats:

· There are now 70 million blogs

· Approximately 120,000 are started each day or 1.4 new blogs every second

· Bloggers post an average of 17 posts per second (or 1.5 million posts per day)

So how do these super bloggers get such great traffic to their blog and moreover, how do they keep their blog interesting? Here are some tips to not only get you up to speed on blogging, but keep you on track:

1) Blog frequently: you should blog at a minimum of once a week and ideally two to three times a week. Don’t forget to spell check your blogs, you don’t want to be posting stuff that has typos in it. This will turn off your reader. Your posts don’t have to be long. If you only post in 50 word increments that’s fine. Don’t force yourself to post longer.

2) Don’t obsess over stats: Seriously. While it’s easy enough to get caught up in the “my blog is more popular than your blog” mantra it’s not a good thing to spend your time on, also stats and subscribers will come and go. Try to limit yourself to checking stats once a week or once a month if you can hold off that long.

3) Don’t obsess over comments (or lack thereof): Some bloggers will get comments right away and some will take a bit longer. Just because people aren’t commenting doesn’t mean they’re not reading. This is one of the biggest complaints I hear from bloggers: No one is commenting. Don’t let a blank comment section dissuade you from blogging but when someone has commented by sure to comment back or just thank them for visiting if their entry doesn’t warrant a response. Also if the reader has a blog, visit theirs as well and place a comment. They’ll appreciate you for it and it’s a great way to network!

4) Be patient: let’s face it, blogging takes time. Regardless of how many statistics you see on blogs that get mountains of traffic, none of this happened in a week (or even in a month). The quickest way to talk yourself out of blogging is to be impatient for something to happen. Keep blogging, eventually something will. If you do all the right things eventually traffic and readers will beat a path to your door!

5) Listen: know what your reader needs and blog on those topics. Knowing what’s important to your reader is a big step in creating a powerful blog that will get traffic. Know what’s going on in your industry, what should you be talking about? What does your reader need help with? How can your blog become a resource? Who else does your reader need to know in order to be successful? Maybe it’s time that you interview other experts on your blog or at the very least, link to them.

6) Write good headlines: people judge a blog by its headline and when you’re subscribed to a lot of blog feeds (as I am) you know that readers will pick and chose the blogs they read based on the headlines. Don’t make readers guess what your blog is about, be specific and be benefit driven.

7) Be timeless: while many of your posts will relate to topics or news items that are going on *now*, it’s also good to write posts that will be evergreen, meaning posts that don’t have a short lifespan. For example I have posts dating back to 2006 that still get commented on and passed around because their topic is as relevant today as it was three years ago.

8) Posting tips: I generally try to post by 7am EST (8am at the latest). Studies have shown that people have more time to read blogs and emails before 9am EST so make sure all your posting is done by then.

9) No time for the long-winded: Write readable posts. Keep your sentences to no more than 25 words and paragraphs to no more than 7 lines of text. Use lots of bullet points too whenever you can.

10) Get your own domain name early: there’s nothing worse than getting a blog that’s someone else’s property (i.e. Blogger or Wordpress). If you wait too long to move your blog to your own domain you’ll risk losing search engine ranking and traffic. Any blog can be linked to any URL, just ask your web person to help you out with this.

So now that you have your tips, what on earth will you blog on? Here are a few ideas to consider:

Blog on: trends, write reviews, interview experts, comment on news pieces related to your topic, blog on good reviews your book got, blog on your new book, blog on the elephant in the room (talk about the thing everyone seems to be avoiding).

How to Become an Internet Marketer

As with any job, training and skills will be needed and acquired. Think back to when you got your first job and how much you knew about it; most knew little or nothing. Training was provided by the company and certain skills were acquired during your tenure. There was a probationary period of 90 days, at which time you would be reviewed by your boss or supervisor and receive an assessment of your ability to perform your work duties.

To become an internet marketer there is little difference, other than there’s no boss or supervisor to watch over you and verify that the work is being completed timely and accurately. You will need to seek your own training, so without further adieu, let me guide you with the steps you will need to become a successful internet marketer.

There is an abundance of information available to you about this subject, but there is no complete guide on how to do it. Although I do not have this guide either, there are many techniques that exist, and each one has a cost associated with it, just as with starting your own business. As they say, “Nothing is Free.”

It has been my experience that it takes 90 days of proper training and useful information to acquire the knowledge and skills to become an internet marketer.

Here is a list of techniques and items you need familiarize yourself with:

• Set aside $400-$600 for educational materials (i.e. software,

videos, e-books)

• Locate and learn the techniques that work best for you. This

information will come to you hard and fast from everywhere!

• Become familiar with social networks sites such as (twitter,

Following Conventions is the Key to Correct Web Design, Not Innovation

Web designers excel in their chosen field through determination and hard-work over a number of years. There can be no short-cut in this regard. However, there is such a thing as an “eye for design” by which I mean a latent appreciation for aesthetic beauty and an intuitive feel for proportion and symmetry; but creativity shouldn’t be expressed like free jazz, but restrained with set guidelines and rules.

There are a great deal of conventions to follow in layout and design.

The first big mistake that many fall for is to design a site for a particular niche, creating a site that is visually different from all others in that category merely to stand out from the crowd.

It never works. Use colour and visual clues commonly associated with that category. For instance, if you are designing for a theatre then use images of curtains and wooden floorboards; if you are putting together a site for a book club then have obvious images of books. Remember, obvious is good.

Colour convention too needs to be observed with pink and purple for baby-orientated sites; green for environment and yellow for young children’s sites as just a few examples.

Colour is important as well on certain page elements. All links should be blue and underlined. This is true for all the search engines and it is ingrained in our daily user experience. You can’t reinvent the wheel, so don’t even try.

As for layout, always place a search box in the top half of the page. A sizeable minority of users consistently always use the search facility to navigate around a site; and a logo that links to the homepage is a must for every contemporary website. This is one convention that has come into common use over the last few years.

Always have a contact form within easy access of the user, preferably as a link in the main menu. Not only this but put the address and other contact information in the footer. This could be a legal requirement for charities and certain types of businesses. Like a link to the homepage on your logo, users have now come to expect this information in this area on every site.

You need to be able to describe just what your website or business is in one paragraph. This then needs to be at the very least placed in a prominent position on the home page, and preferably on every page; although failing that a tagline of between 3 to 8 words will suffice.

Spacing and distance between items on a page and in particular heading, paragraphs and lines of text are everything. Never, ever present blocks of text which are smaller than 12px as anything beneath this size is uncomfortable to read.

Fitting into this need is the grid layout. Although grids are fairly new to online design no self-respecting web designer would tackle a job without using one.

Above are just a few web design conventions. There is enough in existence to fill a book but these are some of the important ones.

Remember, we need a triumph of function over design. Don’t let your creativity dictate your output; follow the rules and guidelines already established.

You Need To Spend Cash To Succeed In SEO

It may seem incredible to believe but once upon a time in the 90’s the Yahoo directory really did list all the major sites worth visiting.

Today there is in the region of 190 million websites and growing on a day-by-day basis. According to Technorati there is one blog started every second.

The World Wide Web isn’t the 1995 pond any more, but a vast cyber-ocean of millions and millions of websites written in nearly every language known to man.

It is a vast online repository of the good, the bad and the ugly. The good being all the websites we all know and love and visit regularly; the bad being the spam and Made for AdSense (MFA) sites, and the ugly being the nasty child pornography.

Your little website is but a drop in this binary ocean.

Now the advice given out again and again by SEO hubs such as Search Engine Land and SEOmoz that if you follow a certain number of rules about online optimization and if you write quality, original material you will succeed. No you won’t.

Here’s some words of wisdom from opinionated designer Eric Kajaluoto:

“No one is looking at you. No one is listening to you. You don’t believe me but I’m right. Even if you create a portable fountain-of-youth, your start-up’s biggest challenge will be to get anyone to pay attention. Really - it is that hard”.

Wow, that paragraph either acted like a sledgehammer on your expectations or it resonated with your experience.

It’s this sort of advice that should be given to all the kids hanging around Digital Point, the biggest Search Engine Optimization (SEO) forum on the web. Started in 2004 it has, at the time of writing, nearly 300,000 members and over 11 million posts. Most of those members are young men under the age of 21 and all chasing the pot of gold that they think lies over the rainbow.

And now here is the key to being a success on the internet: spending money.

Don’t bother submitting a press release to one of the free services, pay for a premium service that actually distributes far and wide for you; don’t bother submitting your site to hundreds of those spam-filled free directories, at the very least pay for inclusion in Yahoo and http://Business.com directories. These are established, quality directories not here-today-gone-tomorrow affairs. And if you site isn’t professionally designed, forget it - first impressions, both on the net and off, count for everything.

More than anything pay money out for a serious PPC ad campaign. Done correctly, this is the difference between success and failure for a new startup.

So happy amateurs get out of the kitchen if you can’t stand the heat. If you don’t have money in your wallet that you can slap on the table then move over and retire from the game because you are wasting your time and clogging up the pipes.

Recent Announcements by the W3C Do Not Mean the End of XHTML

Most Content Management System templates today are written in one of the variations of XHTML, most commonly 1.0 Strict or 1.0 Transitional. In actual fact there is very little difference between XHTML and HTML.

Extensible Hypertext Mark-up Language (XHTML) was created to be a synthesis between Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) and Extensible Mark-up Language (XML), but Microsoft never implemented support for XHTML in their Internet Explorer browser so any advantages it could have brought - such as XML namespaces MathML or SVG - were never realised.

The differences between the two are mainly one of syntax with XHTML being case-sensitive and requiring rigid closing with an end tag. Internet Explorer handles XHTML by using its inbuilt parser to read the language the same as it does HTML.

The reason that XHTML is so much more popular than its HTML cousin amongst the web design community is that many are still sold on what XHTML originally promised and the fact that the world governing standards body, the W3C, announced that HTML would no longer be developed after version 4.01 Strict.

In 2002 the W3C commenced work on XHTML 2, but within a few years the world’s browser makers conspired together to commence work on a new version of HTML. They considered that XHTML 2 was too specific to the presentation of data and not universal enough for all website needs.

In 2008 the W3C heeded their call and formally announced the roadmap for HTML 5.

For a while it looked like the rather gigantic differences between HTML 5 and XHTML 2 would eventually give webmasters genuine choice rather than the false hope of HTML 4 and XHTML 1, but in the spring of 2009 the W3C publicly declared they were winding down all work on XHTML 2 in order to concentrate time and resources on HTML 5.

For those webmasters who prefer to code in XHTML it may seem that the W3C has consigned their choice to the dustbin of history, but fear not: XHTML will live on! Let me explain.

The reason XHTML 2 failed was that it was too adventurous. It was not backwards compatible with either version 1.0 or 1.1 and in effect tried to reinvent the wheel; but the unique syntax of the XHTML 1.0 and 1.1 will live on in XHTML 5, a variant of HTML 5.

Briefly, some new features of HTML 5 are new elements - section, article, footer, audio, video, progress, nav, meter, time, aside, canvas, datagrid; new types of form controls - dates and times, email, url, search; and deprecated elements dropped - center, font, strike.

Due to some major differences between the consulted parties on key aspects of HTML 5, it is not expected to be finalised for at least 10 years, although the recent W3C announcement that they will throw their full weight behind version 5 instead of XHTML 2 may shorten this time frame.

Elements of HTML 5 are have already appeared in all major browsers, including Internet Explorer 8.

So fear not hard-working web designer - XHTML will continue to be with us for years, if not decades to come.

Some Questions to Help You Find the Right Web Designer

There are numerous web designers out they plying their trade. The truth is though that it is a lot like playing the guitar - lots of people claim to be able to do it, but not many can do it well.

If you have no experience in web design but have been given the responsibility for hiring a creative professional, you may feel a little intimidated about what to expect or unsure about what you really want.

Below are some questions that you can answer yourself before you start making enquiries.

1. Who will be responsible for maintaining the website or providing new content?

Any designer worth their salt will take into account the level of expertise that you or your colleagues have when it comes to these matters. A website should be easy to update for somebody with absolutely no web design experience.

2. Do you already have a logo or branded materials such as business cards, stationary?

You may already have some quality design work from other occasions that you would like integrated; otherwise having a logo specially created may be an additional cost that you will need to factor in.

3. What is your approximate allocated budget?

Most people have no idea at all about the true cost of creating a web site and usually vastly underestimate it. Today we are hooked on online price comparison services and so cost is our only decision factor. Web design isn’t a mass manufactured product, but the work of an individual craftsman. Yes there are lots of cheap deals out there but remember - you get what you pay for.

4. Do you feel your current website promotes a favourable user experience? What shortcomings exist on your current website?

If you already have a website then write a complete list about what you don’t like about it; then you’ll have a fair idea about how the new site should look.
