Membership Sites on the Internet
July 31, 2009
Membership sites are becoming more and more popular on the Internet. It is a great business since it provides a steady income through membership subscriptions. In addition, you can also have many different kinds of ads relevant to the theme of your membership site, and make affiliate commissions through these ads.
In order to have a successful membership site it must be specialized in a certain niche. You should choose a niche that you are passionate about and believe in strongly. You will need to provide information that is interesting and useful enough for people to pay to have this information. You can set up a schedule such as publish a newsletter either daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly. Weekly or biweekly are the two best options - daily is too much for your readers, and once a month is too little contact to keep an interested person subscribed.
There are many membership scripts available which you can install to run your membership site. Basically, depending upon the script that you choose, you can program it to run your membership pretty much hands off, while your main job is to constantly be providing good content to your members.
Of course, you have to market your site and bring in the members. If you already have a list, this is a good place to start promoting. You can also join forums and networking sites where you can join in and add to discussions and be helpful. Just show your signature link in the signature box, and this way people will get to know you and trust you. This will most likely bring them to your website. Of course, there is article marketing and ezine ads, and many other ways of creating traffic to your website.
It is very important to stay very close to your membership site with up to date content. Always think of adding new and relevant items that your membership will find of interest. Grow with it, give it life! Make sure that your subscribers are always anticipating their next newsletter. Always be on the lookout to find new and innovative ways to make it better.
Interact with your subscribers. Ask what they would like to see. Let them suggest subjects of interest within your niche. Get constructive member input and apply their suggestions.
So a membership site is really a good model for an internet business. However, it is a business that will require a lot of work and dedication. It is not a business that you will build overnight, or expect to get rich from quickly. If you have patience, passion and the right mindset it is very likely you will succeed.
It is important to know the basics of online marketing in all your endeavors. You need to build upon solid ground. Make sure you have built your foundation before you attempt to build any kind of business. Education is very important in online marketing. Follow a good leader and get the essentials of online marketing. Then, apply the strategies that you have learned.

Is it True That the Internet Could Slow Down?
July 30, 2009
There are several stories circulating on the Internet regarding bandwidth (the speed at which you access the Internet) and how it is going to begin to reach capacity very soon unless something is done. This will render the Internet almost completely useless for everything but the simplest and slimmest of applications.
The reason given is because the demand for high-speed Internet access is growing at a rate of 60% each year. Estimates tell us that by as early as 2010, we could begin to see excessive slowdowns in Internet response based purely on the amount of traffic that is traversing the web around the world.
In addition to the mammoth demand growth factor is the fact that bandwidth-hogging applications like YouTube and other multimedia streaming sources are causing bandwidth to slow down as well.
What does all of this mean? It means that the Internet would not be fast enough for much beyond maybe checking email. Feature-rich web pages would churn slowly on your screen. It would take many minutes to log onto your online bank account to check your balance. In effect, it would be like the days when we had to use analog modems to connect to the Internet.
One potential concern resulting from eventuality would be that operating system (Microsoft Windows, Mac, etc.) and other business and home application patches and updates would be slowed down, as would be antivirus definitions, etc.
How else could it affect you? If you are now enjoying the high speed of your Internet connection, enjoy it while you can. But beyond that, businesses that have begun to depend on the Internet could be forced to do business the old fashioned way using snail mail, faxing and other resources to send and receive information around the world.
Imagine a world without the ability to download movies or music and where the act of researching information on Wikipedia would be slowed to a crawl. All of this and the other myriad of website applications that you enjoy now would be challenging to view.
What is being done? There are several options being looked into right now. US companies and those in the UK are busy right now in an effort to upgrade infrastructure, cabling and supercomputers to expand the capabilities of the Internet. There is also talk about planning a very fast parallel network called “The Grid.” Other consultants are conferring on the idea of creating systems for “caching” (storing frequently requested information) on servers in the cloud rather than having the Internet deliver information on demand as it is needed.
The bottom line – there is nothing for the average user to do at this point. Keeping informed as to the possibilities that might occur will help you understand the ‘whys’ behind any major slowdowns that you might face in the near future.
Technology has accomplished amazing feats in the last 20 years, and the
hope is that something will be devised and implemented quickly to maintain the instant, any time access to information and entertainment that we all need and desire. That is what makes the Internet such an important resource for us all.

9 Simple Tips For Writing Visitor-friendly Website Copy
July 30, 2009
Whenever we land on a site our initial focus is taken by design, quickly followed by content. If you’ve got a brand new site, complete with all the flash bells and whistles, but don’t have the copy to match it, you’ll leave visitors disinterested and ambivalent.
We’re all predisposed to communicate. Whether amongst friends, colleagues or even total strangers we write, talk and discuss everything. Websites are a medium where the written word is crucial in communicating your message. Without a strong message, there is no website. So the importance of good quality copy, whether that’s snappy headlines or emotive body text, is of paramount importance.
Here are a few good tips for really reaching out to your audience and boosting your SEO in the process.
1. Don’t oversell yourself
It might seem a bit self-defeating but if you overkill your self-promotion it can work against you. Stating what differentiates your site from the rest is one thing, but gratuitously reaffirming that point without additional facts (i.e. awards, certificates and client comments) isn’t going to do you any favours.
2. Be natural
Writers tend to be their own harshest critics. Copy should sound and flow naturally. Don’t try to overstretch yourself, get the message across in a way that is easy to understand and typifies your site’s ethos.
3. Don’t force keywords
SEO copywriting has had a bad name in the past due to its overreliance on keywords. Today this is generally regarded as bad practice and should be avoided at all costs. Adding a few here and there isn’t an issue, but you should certainly be looking at a keyword density of no more than 5%.
4. Write for your audience
It seems simple, but you’d be surprised how many websites and copywriters forget this fundamental rule. If you’re writing for a trendy clothing company, it goes without saying that it should be written in a tone that is significantly different to that of a heavy engineering firm. Be informative and light-hearted where necessary, but don’t forget who it is you’re supposed to be appealing to.
5. Always proof your work
There’s always a temptation to finish a piece of work and send it straight out there and getting a start on the next one. However, if your writing copy without editorial control – or at least some kind of overseer – then you need to ensure that what you’re producing is accurate. Glaring errors are a good way of ruining a site’s credibility, particularly if they’re dotted around liberally.
6. Offer some motivation
With business and, more particularly, ecommerce websites, you need to try to be emotive with your copy. Visitors need to be given a reason for using your services and it’s the job of the copy to do this. A call to action – ‘buy this today and receive a free…’ – is an extremely successful way of rounding of product copy particularly. You don’t need to go overboard, but a little gentle nudge is always useful.
7. Quantity and quality
Websites that are packed to the rafters with copy can be as much of a deterrent as those with none at all. Between 200 and 300 words on each page, excepting those that require additional information, is usually enough to offer a succinct overview and provide all of the information necessary. Quality spread out in the right quantity offers the ideal balance.
8. Keep copy relevant
How many times to you read a site that hasn’t been updated for months or even years? It’s off-putting and unprofessional when you see something that refers to ‘the upcoming Easter holiday’ in July. Unless used in a blog, or you are prepared to go through and update the relevant pages, avoid using date or event-related phrases. It takes a lot of work to keep a website fresh, don’t make it harder on yourself.
9. Don’t forget your headings
Your page headings (H1) and sub-headings (H2) not only inform the search engine spiders about your site’s content, but they also provide visitors with an immediate point of reference. Keep them to-the-point and relevant to your body text and it’s hard to go wrong.

Why Should I Shop Online?
July 30, 2009
No matter what you are purchasing, you’ll find that you can probably find it online. In fact, more and more people are now making most of their purchases on the web these days. Wondering why you should think about shopping online? Here is a look at some of the great reasons to start shopping on the web.
Reason 1 - Shop at Any Time
One of the main reasons you should start shopping online is because it allows you to shop at any time. No matter what time of the day or night it may be, you can start up your computer and get shopping online. Even if you can’t make it to the stores while they are open because of your schedule, it is always possible to shop online, no matter the day or the time.
Reason 2 - No Crowds
There are no crowds to deal with when you shop online, which is another big reason to start shopping on the web. If you hate battling all the people in the stores, then online shopping is for you. You won’t have to wait in line trying to make a purchase. In fact, with just a few clicks of your mouse you can make the purchase you want to.
Reason 3 - Great Prices
Great prices are another reason that shopping online is such a great choice. Most of the time you can find some of the best prices on the web. The Internet is so competitive and sites are always trying to get your business. For this reason the prices are great, trying to provide you with an incentive to get you to purchase from their site.
Reason 4 - Save Some Time

Avoiding Trademark Infringement When Choosing a Domain Name
July 30, 2009
Many webmasters erroneously believe that just because their domain name registrar says a particular domain name is ‘available’ that it truly is. This is not necessarily so. Even if a domain name is physically available, it may not legally be open for use. Why? It’s because there might already be a company that has the rights to the keywords used within the domain name.
If this happens yet the webmaster claims the domain name anyway, they are at risk of losing it through a domain name arbitration proceeding. They could even be charged with trademark/copyright infringement if things get really ugly. For this reason it’s best to make sure the keywords used in a domain name aren’t protected for someone else. This article will explain how webmasters can make such a determination.
First, webmasters need to check and see if their chosen domain name resembles any existing trademark that is on the books. They will want to do this before actually investing any money in the domain name. To search existing trademarks, webmasters can visit the website of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office which is USPTO.gov. From here they can search a database that contains current trademarks as well as those that are pending.
If a domain name is similar to a registered or pending trademark, webmasters need to evaluate whether the domain name is still worth taking. Usually, if a site is not selling the same types of merchandise or services that the other business is selling and the trademark is not popular, a webmaster probably won’t get into legal trouble if they decide to go on and register the domain name. To be completely sure, webmasters can run the domain name by a trademark attorney. It shouldn’t cost too much for an hour consultation.
Of course, if a webmaster would prefer zero percent risk, they can simply try to think of another domain name. When they go about doing this, they need to be more generic and less creative in what they come up with. Using search engine keywords for a domain name is one such strategy. Webmasters can also look into using dictionary terms. If all else fails they can take a generic term and combine it with a term that is less likely to be taken, such as their first and last name.
Either way, once a suitable domain name has been chosen, webmasters should consider getting it trademarked themselves, especially if they are using it to help brand their business. With an official trademark, a webmaster has more legal power should another company try to take them to court. And since there’s no shortage of domain name bullies, (companies that try to steal profitable domain names from smaller enterprises), a webmaster should use all legal avenues available to protect the rights of their business.
In conclusion, by checking whether or not a domain name has keywords that are part of a trademark, webmasters lessen the risk that they will have legal problems in the future. If there are problems, and a domain name arbitration proceeding does not rule in a webmaster’s favor, they can turn to The Domain Name Rights Coalition.

The Basics For Building Your Internet Marketing Business
July 30, 2009
I entered the Internet Marketing world because I worked in the corporate world for many years, and did not want to do that anymore. More than anything I wanted to stay home. I have two dogs that I adore, and I just love being home with them. My life is very peaceful and quiet, and that makes me happy.
So when I found Internet Marketing I immediately knew it was for me. I loved everything about it. I started learning about all the different ways to promote yourself on the Internet. I learned about attraction marketing. This is a new way of marketing today where you brand yourself as a leader and in that way you attract people to follow you and to buy from you. It really works much better than the old way of chasing people to sell to them, and I was very much attracted to this idea.
So that was one of the first basic concepts I learned. I also saw how anyone who is committed can become a leader and set themselves up to make money on the Internet. I learned that if you can offer value, you can be a leader. Even from the beginning, as you start learning and acquiring experience one day at a time, there is always someone that you can help. And this is how you start making a presence and becoming established as an Internet Marketer.
There is a lot to learn in the business of Internet Marketing, and it is impossible to learn everything overnight. So it is also impossible to establish a business overnight, contrary to what some people think or may want to make you believe. There is a lot of hype and false promises in many of the promotions that are offered. Yes, there is a lot of money to be made online, but not usually overnight and certainly not because of one product. It really is a business which demands a lot of commitment and effort.
On a daily basis, I make it a point to get some education. I read newsletters and ebooks about Internet marketing. I attend webinars and go to forums. With every book I read and every webinar I attend I receive new insights, maybe just a little golden nugget that I had not previously been aware of.
Internet Marketing is a lot about acquiring bits of information from everywhere, and then putting it together and applying your knowledge. Always have an open mind and see what information you can derive from any article or from any product. With every step that you take you are learning. With every struggle that you face, you are learning. Yes, I believe more than anything, if you are struggling and managing to solve your issues and coming out on the other side on a daily basis, you are on your way.
But you do have to go through that learning process at the beginning. There is no way to get around it. And you will always be learning, because things change so rapidly in Internet Marketing, and many new products come out.
The main thing is to have a good mindset. I have always known that I am going to succeed. I don’t see things as obstacles but as challenges. I know that I am as smart and as willing to make money as anyone else. I work hard, and I see the results, one day at a time.
So if you have a passion for Internet marketing, whether it be in affiliate marketing, product creation, or content marketing, you need 3 things: a good mindset, commitment, and perseverance. If you can truly say you own these 3 qualities, you are in for a great ride. And don’t forget to have fun along the way!

Web Template Generator - How to Make Your Own Web Templates
July 30, 2009
I have discovered a powerful “Out of the box” web template generator. With this web template generator can you create great looking and unique web templates in minutes, and they actually work when you export and upload them after words!
After I downloaded the fully working free version (no credit card information needed) and made some web templates was I so exited. With this software, you can instantly create awesome web templates in your own design.
The web template generator uses a unique WYSIWYG approach that does not require any experience to designing web templates. You simply click a few buttons to view design suggestions, change the color schemes, change menu bar and button themes, arrange page layouts and so on.
Your selections are instantly applied to the built-in preview and can be moderated even more by adjusting the properties for distinctive elements.
The interface is very user friendly - they have copied the standard office interface, and I think that’s a good idea because this makes the user more “comfy” as they know how the office interface works.
The web template generator includes a great selection of background pictures, textures, photo clip art, fonts and other design elements to help you make your web templates without the need for supplemental resources.
It is easy to use, yet very powerful. No need to learn HTML, CSS, Photoshop, or other technologies. When you are happy with your web templates, you simply export and upload them. It works with Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, regular html and others cms systems.
This is a novice web templates designer’s dream comes true, but It isn’t freeware. However, you can download a free fully functional version, with only one difference; it adds an obtrusive watermark to your exported web templates. If you want to get rid of this watermark, you have to pay for it.
But to click a button, get a random design a few times until you find one you like, tweak the header, buttons, layout etc. and hit export to Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal ect. to me, is well worth the $130, they are asking. I know how to do this from scratch in Photoshop, and then on to Notepad, HTML, CSS and finally my CMS, it takes hours, if not days. This is literally 10 minutes, and you can have a site up and running.
I think it has the ability to dramatically alter the ease of use, when creating web templates based on Wordpress and other CMS systems. The web templates generator takes web design to different level, by offering automated tools which even the most lazy, would-be designer can use and understand. And more than that, it’s the fact that the result actually works correctly that impresses me the most. Not only can you build great looking Wordpress and generic HTML web templates, but they actually install properly and work as they should.

Text Messaging Tips
July 29, 2009
Sending a text message is an easy way to inform your family or relative or love one that you are okay. There are things to consider when sending text messages.
Text messaging is a new form of communication using mobile phones. Instead of the traditional way of calling up a person, you input a message (much like typing in a keyboard, but this time with the keypad of the mobile phone) and send it to a recipient. The receiver will be able to read what you have inputted. And he can reply the same way.
It is one of the most popular recent inventions to date. It has greatly helped bridge a lot of people from different parts of the globe. One of the reasons it grew popular is because it is way cheaper than calling up someone.
Composing messages
To write text messages from a wireless phone, choose the text-messaging feature of the phone. Ggo to the message portion of your cellular phone and type your message. You can type using three different methods.
First, you can use T9 word or T9 mode. It simply utilizes one keystroke per letter. The phone translates the keystroke into usual words by using the letters on every key as well as with a compressed database. It works under the premise of predictability. The disadvantage in using this type is you cannot abbreviate. And fully written words take up so much of the limited character space allotted to you per message.
The second way is the Abc Mode or Multiple Mode. This mode is used for typing words that entails the use of the letters on the phone’s numerical keypad. You need to hit every key from one to three times in order to obtain the letter you need.
The third way is by using the 123 modes. This is used to type numbers instead of letters. For example is inputting telephone numbers or serial codes.
Sending messages
There are two basic ways of sending messages. First is the traditional means, via a mobile phone. You type a message on your phone and send it to your recipient’s number.
The second way is via the internet. There are many online websites that feature free texting using their services. They provide a space where you type the message using your keyboard. Then you input the mobile phone number of the recipient. The message will go the phone of the recipient.
There is also the option of sending the message to the recipient’s inbox in his computer if he is using the same program, and if he is also registered in that site.
Healthy Texting
It is usually cheaper to send text messages to recipients subscribed in the same network as yours. There are surcharges incurred for sending messages to other networks. You might therefore want to subscribe to the biggest network. It also depends on who you are texting regularly.
Avoid texting while driving. It is very dangerous and might cause an accident. Keep your eyes on the road when you are behind the wheel. You can read the message later.
Sending the same message frequently to one person can be irritating to the receiver. Send only once. If he does not reply immediately then he might be doing some important matters. He will reply when he is able to.
Turn off your cell phone while inside the classroom, library, theater, hospital, as well as the chapel, golf course, airplane or beside your friend that needs your attention.
Do not flaunt your cell phone in public so as not to get the attention of thieves or robbers. Cell phones are hot items because of these are very sellable. Insure your phone if you can.
Before placing your cell phone inside your pocket, lock the keypad so as to evade making unwanted calls and possible charge backs.

Sending Free Text Messages Online
July 29, 2009
The internet is a haven of free information within our reach. Now it went further and let us send free text messages too.
Using the Internet to send SMS or text messages are becoming rampant. Since more and more people are using the net, the convenience of sending free text messages are now widely used, along with voice calls and web cams. Many websites offer free text messaging services as part of promoting their products for trade. It is an effective marketing strategy that lures online users to their website to browse their advertisements.
Here are the reliable sites you can use in sending free SMS or text messages to other people’s mobiles:
Google send to Phone
Google is one of the most prominent names in the internet. It is basically a search engine, and then later on expanded to giving free web email services. Now it also features free text messaging. Their texting program is very simple, reliable, and easy to use. But you still need to install an extension meant for Firefox and IE in order to directly send messages from your own browser.
The user fills in appropriately the blanks provided in the page. You input the ten digit number of the recipient, the carrier name (there will be a given selection) and your message and subject title. Placing a subject is optional. You can also choose to save the information after sending by ticking the appropriate box.
txt2day.com
This site is very easy to use just like Google. You only need to key-in the 10-digit number, your e-mail address (but this is optional), select a provider and write down your text message before you hit the “send” button. You could also opt to block certain numbers such that you will not be bothered with any of their messages if you wish.
The site is very friendly to beginners. It has guides and text helps to assist those having a hard time navigating the page. If you do not know the wireless provider of the person you are sending a message to, you can look for the provider via the mobile phone number. The other great thing, as mentioned earlier, is that you can easily block the number of people who are spamming you.
SMS Everywhere
SMS Everywhere is probably the simplest to use among all the online free text messaging services providers. You will only fill out the box for the number and the box for your message and hit the “send” button. As compared to the other two, you do not need to know or verify the provider. The system will do it for you. It sits very well with the non technical persons.
Yahoo Messenger’s Send an SMS
Yahoo is the biggest competitor of Google. It is dedicated to giving ultimate satisfaction to online users with their many services online. They have a search engine, web based email, instant messaging for real time chat, online news, games and so much more.
Yahoo takes it a notch higher by offering free text messaging also. And it does it with style. It integrates this service to emails and chats also. You can send text messages to any of your contacts in yahoo messenger if their phone numbers are listed. Also, if you are offline in chat, you could log in to your mobile, such that when an online user sends you a message, it will be sent to your mobile inbox.
And like the rest of the free text messaging services, yahoo’s text program is also user-friendly.
Text’em
As compared to other sites, this site does not possess any clear advantage with the various other services. It also needs more steps, such as the provider, e-mail address, carrier, message and security code, respectively. Although it is a bit time consuming, it actually works.
Hence, most of the sites noted here only works in the US. This means, you can only send messages to US mobiles. Sending the text message is actually free. However, depending on the plan, your receiver may be charged for the messages he or she will receive.

Finding the Best Results Using Meta Search Engines
July 29, 2009
Do you wonder if you’re missing anything by looking at just the top 10 search results? Or maybe the thought of clicking the Next button 100 times and risking carpal tunnel stops you from digging deeper.
Meta search engines can help find results you might otherwise miss. However, combining results from many engines into a single list brings up some issues. By understanding the problems and their solutions, you can choose a better meta search engine to use.
Problems that Affect Meta Search Engine Rankings
1) How to judge the importance of results? If there was broad agreement between the major search engines, ordering search results would be straightforward. Unfortunately, numerous studies have shown there is surprisingly little overlap among the top results of the major search engines.
In hindsight this is not surprising since there is enormous pressure to get high rankings using dubious tactics such as link farming or hidden content only seen by search engines. The result is a lot of “noise” in rankings when compared over different search engines.
2) How to pinpoint areas of interest? Many search engines offer suggestions for search terms that help focus on your area of interest. Eventually though, you have to look through lists of results. If meta search engines can help pinpoint interesting results in the list through indexing, clustering, or re-ranking, that saves your valuable time.
Ranking Methods used by Meta Search Engines
1) Original ranking – one method is just to use the original rankings returned by the search engines. Some adjustment is necessary to break ties or boost results perceived to be more relevant. For example, dogpile.com changes the original ranking based on what search terms are used.
* Problematic – different search engine ranking methods are probably not compatible.
2) Vote ranking – an interesting method of ranking is to order by votes, where a web page gets a vote each time it is in the top 10 results of a search engine. Some meta search engines, such as Ixquick.com show you how many votes each result got.
* Good – however not many web pages get multiple votes.
3) Filtered ranking – this method is based on whether results contain certain words or phrases. You can choose words or phrases that filter out results or keep certain results with desirable phrases. Many desktop-based meta search engines have this feature.
* Useful but brittle - a result may be ruled in or out by accident depending on what specific word the author used.
4) Cluster ranking – once you have settled on good search words or phrases, eventually you must look through a list of results and pick out the most relevant ones. Clustering puts results into similar groups so that instead of looking through one long list, you immediately rule out non-relevant groups and concentrate on smaller lists of relevant groups. Clusty.com uses clustering to group results into smaller lists that are easier to search.
* Good – depending on the size and quality of the clusters.
5) Relevance ranking – Besides looking at the content of the search results, the latest meta search engines, such as iMetaSearch, can also look at which results you have marked as relevant and sort results based on your feedback. These meta search engines can re-order the results or clusters to automatically find results and clusters similar to the one you have marked.
* Good – user feedback is taken into account and all words plus their context are used to find similar results, not just a few specific words.
Chuck Paulson has over 12 years experience using and building meta search engines. He has recently released the simple-to-use iMetaSearch meta search engine at Puffinware LLC.
