Do You Know What Makes the Best Australian Business Web Sites?

May 26, 2009

Getting your business online is not as easy as just getting a domain name and putting up any old web page describing your business. There is an art to making excellent business websites Australian or otherwise. Take the time to do a little preparation before going online.

If you are an Australian business owner who is just starting to place his business on the Internet then you are making a wise choice. Once you have a website for your business you will be able to get your business in front of millions of potential customers from all over the world. However, before you jump right into the online marketing world you should be aware of a few of the qualities that all Australian business web sites should have.

First of all, your web site must look professional. First impressions are very important, and you want to start building credibility as soon as someone lands on your web page. You will probably be hiring a web designer to build your page for you. If you have no idea how you want your website to look just browse around the Internet. Look at other websites out there until you find one or two that you like. Show these sites to your web designer so that she has a good idea of what you want.

The best Australian business web sites are those that are easy to navigate. You want your site to look clean. Navigation links to different pages on the site should be clearly indicated. The pages should be well organized, and they should contain helpful information for your customers. The easier your site is for your customer to navigate the more they will trust you. This is because you have taken the time to make their shopping experience more pleasant.

There are things you should definitely avoid on your website. Never use flashing banners on your site because these not only take longer to load, they also annoy the heck out of people. When was the last time you stayed on a site that had banners flashing at you? You should also avoid the use of music or cute animation on your site. These types of items take longer to load especially for those that do not have high speed Internet connection. Online shoppers have such a vast array of sights to choose from that they will go to the site that loads the fastest.

Another thing that all the best Australian business web sites have in common is a brand or logo. If your business has a logo offline, don’t forget to add that logo to all of your web pages online. This is how people will identify you. In the vast ocean of online business websites, you definitely want to be able to stand out from the crowd.

So if you are considering taking your business online pay attention to some of the best Australian business web sites. Take note of how their sites look, and what they do to stand out. Then get a good website designer and develop your own website for your business. You will be surprised at how much more money you can make by going online.

Great Techniques For SEO and Link Building

May 26, 2009

In my days as a SEO consultant I’ve seen too much people making the same mistakes and I’ve decided to write down a few guidelines you should follow when doing search engine optimization or link building for your website. Here are 4 ideas to get you started:

1. Don’t Throw Away Your Links

A very common problem for many webmasters is that 70% of their incoming links point to www.yourwebsite.com and 30% of their incoming links point to yourwebsite.com. Search engines think that these are 2 completely different pages on your website, therefore the content on www.yourwebsite.com gets only 70% of the “link love” it actually deserves. How to fix that? You need to make a 301 Redirect from one page to the other and your problems are gone. Look into the folder with index.htm, index.php or whatever your website is using. There should be a .htaccess file - if there isn’t one, simply create it with any text editor. Once you have a .htaccess file, add those lines to it:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourwebsite.com [NC]

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yourwebsite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

2. Deep Linking

Don’t spend all your efforts on building links only to your homepage (e.g. www.yourwebsite.com). Having lots of links pointing to other pages on your website tells search engines that there is good content to be found all over your website. Pointing all your links to your homepage is a sign for search engines that your website is shallow and doesn’t provide as much value to the visitor as it should.

3. Secret: A Great Way to Get Free High-PR Links!!!

This is an idea we haven’t shared with anyone so far, but our registered members really deserve to know about it. There is a way for you to obtain highly relevant High-PR links for free! How to do that? Take a look at some quality, trusted directories (such as Yahoo, DMOZ, Business.com, Aviva) and find the category that is closely related to your niche. Click on the websites listed there and you will see that quite many of them are dead! Now use a query on Google such as “link:www.somedeadwebsite.com” to see who is linking to those websites. Inform administrators of the websites, linking to dead pages, that they have a broken link on their website and in a large majority of cases they will be happy to replace their broken link with a free link to your website. Yes, it’s as easy as that!

4. Use Smart Anchor Text

Linking to your website with the words “Click here!” isn’t nearly as helpful as linking to it with something related to your niche, e.g. “used car parts” if you are in this business. However, you should get the right natural looking mixture of the anchor text throughout your incoming links! Rule of thumb: use various keyword phrases in 70% of your incoming links, your URL in 20% and various “click here” variations in the remaining 10%.

Following these 4 guidelines your link building will be way more efficient and your website will appear much higher in search engine results pages, bringing you larger amounts of free traffic – and free traffic is what you really want!

Affiliate Marketing is the Best Online Business

May 25, 2009

Affiliate marketing is estimated to be a more than a $7 billion/year industry, and it continues to grow each and every year.

Some of the largest companies in the world rely upon affiliate marketing to fuel their ecommerce sales, and there are thousands of small and medium sized businesses that use affiliate marketing every single day to drive their online sales.

If you don’t already know what affiliate marketing is, it’s a merchant, such as an online toy store, will pay a sales commission to anyone who refers customers to their website.

This referral process is managed by using specially coded links that represent the referring affiliate whenever someone clicks on that person’s link and then rewards them with a commission when that prospect makes a purchase.

In other words, these “affiliate links” keep track of who refers business to a website, and the person who refers this new customer is called an “affiliate”.

Generating a part or even full-time income by running your own affiliate marketing business has many benefits. Here are the 10 reasons that affiliate marketing is considered the best home based business.

1) Very Flexible

You can make money promoting products and services in almost any industry or niche market you can think of. With thousands of available affiliate programs to choose from, you can promote toys this week, gardening tools next week, children’s clothes the following week, and so on.

You can promote any type of products that you think people might be interested in, while earning affiliate commissions each and every month.

2) Run the Online Business Anywhere You Want

Because an affiliate marketing business is all conducted via the Internet, you can run your business from just about anywhere in the world - even while you’re traveling. As long as you’re able gain access to the Internet, you’ll be able to run this business as though you were sitting in your office.

3) Low Startup Costs

An affiliate marketing business can literally be started for less than $100. Unlike other business opportunities that you may have been exposed to, there are no startup fees, or application fees to becoming an affiliate, because it’s completely free.

4) Part Time Or Full Time

If you currently have a job that you’d like to replace with your own business, you can work and build your affiliate marketing business in your spare time, or you can dedicate yourself to affiliate marketing on a full time basis. The point is that you can work as little or as much as you want, and still build a profitable online business through affiliate marketing.

5) No Inventory

Since you’ll be promoting products and services that other companies actually sell, you don’t have to mess with the headaches of having to stock inventory.

6) No Shipping

Since you’re not actually selling something to the end consumer, you don’t have to deal with shipping hassles of actually having to get the item to the customer. Instead, you can just refer someone to your affiliate link, and when they buy the product, the whole ordering and shipping process is out of your hands, and the company that actually owns the product takes it from there.

7) No Payments

Since you’re not selling your own product or service, you don’t have to physically collect money from the customer, set up a merchant account, or any of that stuff. You simply refer people to your affiliate link, and then they pay the company for that product or service, and the company sends you your commission.

8) No Customer Support

This is a great benefit to you, as an affiliate, because you don’t have to deal with the customers of the companies you promote, and this means you don’t have to handle any complaints, problems, or any other types of problems that come with having to interact with customers.

9) No Selling

You may have seen claims from other business opportunities, such as with network marketing, that no selling is involved, but this is completely true with affiliate marketing, because the merchant’s website is already set up to promote the products with proven web copy, testimonials, and so forth. All you have to do is get people to that website.

10) No Website Needed

We just covered the fact that the merchant already has the website that does the selling of the products or services that you’re recommending, so you really don’t even need a website of your own. Now, there are certainly some advantages to having your own affiliate website set up to help promote your affiliate offers, but it simply isn’t necessary to do so in order to make money with an affiliate marketing business.

Focus Your SEO Campaign on Your Needs

May 25, 2009

Quality content, link-building, social media, and on-page optimization – these are just a sampling of the many aspects of SEO. Depending on who you ask, you will get a different answer about which aspect of SEO is most important. You may feel overwhelmed with the SEO tasks ahead of you but you can prioritize your duties by following these simple steps.

Determine Your Goals

Want to know how to prioritize your SEO efforts? Start out by defining your goals. Whether you want to sell products or services, build brand image, or increase site traffic, you need to determine what your priority is and focus on the aspects of SEO that will help you achieve that goal. Once you figure out what your top priorities are, create key performance indicators, or KPIs. The more specific your KPIs are the better. When you have specific KPIs, you can easily determine whether you are meeting or missing your goals. Some examples of KPIs include the goals to get 1000 new newsletter subscribers in one month, sell 10 information products in one week, or rank in the top ten Google results for a specific keyword term.

When you outline your goals and create KPIs, you will know what strategies are required in order for you to meet your goals. The tactic you use will depend on the goal in question. For example, if you want to rank in the top 10 results for “dog shampoo,” one of the steps you’ll want to focus on is link-building with anchor text containing that keyword. If you are trying to increase the number of subscribers to your newsletter, you may spend a lot of time creating and marketing killer web content that targets your particular demographic.

Decide Whether You Need to Focus on Quality Content or Link-Building

You may have heard that the most important aspect of SEO is link-building. This holds true more for new websites than old, established websites. Sure, links remain important no matter what but older sites that have already built up sufficient link authority can get pages ranked simply by adding new content and linking to it internally. On the other hand, if your website is relatively new, your on-page tweaking efforts will have minimal effects until you build link authority. Your basic on-page SEO factors such as optimized content, optimized title tags, crawlability, internal linking, and flat site architecture should be taken care of but your primary focus should be on link-building after that.

Spend Time on the Most Critical Aspects of SEO

Determining your goals and focus is important but no matter what your ultimate aim is, you should always keep the big picture. Pay attention to the most critical aspects of SEO, which are links, interesting content that is optimized for target keywords, crawlability, site structure and optimized title tags.

If you are in the early stages of SEO, focus your efforts on forging relationships with other people online in order to build links and attract traffic. Whether you are a newbie or a seasoned webpreneur, use target keywords in your title tags and make your site accessible for humans and search engines for better crawlability. And don’t forget to provide your visitors with content worth linking to!

Take these simple steps to ensure that you head in the right direction for SEO success. Define your goals in the beginning so you can determine which strategies will give you the most “bang for your buck.” Nevertheless, don’t neglect the critical aspects of on-page and off-page SEO in your quest for achieving specific goals.

Blogs - Still Confused?

May 23, 2009

Blogs are a platform and serve the purpose of content publishing. That is what the essence of a blog is. Perhaps a few years ago they were promoted as some kind of on-line diary but what has really taken off since their launch is business blogging, blogging for business and blogging for SEO / SEM ( search engine optimisation / marketing).

Let’s start from the top though.

A blog as an on-line diary. A personal blog.

There are many blog platforms out there which can be set up in minutes and act as a great way for those not technically minded to start publishing their thoughts. When blog platforms first became popular, such as blogger and wordpress, people up and down the world started setting up their own blogs and publishing online diaries. However things have progressed now and blogs are far more than just platforms for online diaries and the publication of our daily thoughts.

Business Blogging

Many companies now utilise blogs to show of their expertise in a particular industry. They can also be used to give notifications of updates and events. with a normal static website you may not want to change too much of the content, may not have space or may not have the tools or expertise to do this so having a blot on blog to your site with the content management system that comes along with it you can easily write and publish articles in your business niche and become regarded as an expert in what you do. You may also use it to publish updates on your services etc.

Bloggin for Business.

As mentioned above, by writing good informative blog posts you can show that you are an expert in your industry. Along with this you can gain a following and promote your services to all that read your blog. Many people use blogs to sell affiliate products as well as their own services by writing reviews and adding an affiliate link after them. It is not unknown of for people to make money solely from their blogging but to do this you need to by a dynamic blogger with lots of motivation. A strong blog can attract thousands of visitors per day and with that comes the chance to convert many of them into sales.

Blogging for SEO (search eangine optimisation)

As in “business blogging” your site may not have the capacity to hold lots of different articles and bolting on a blog to your site or having a stand alone blog makes sense when you want to use key word rich articles to attract search engine traffic. With the right research and good quality articles with your keywords in them you can gain top placement in Google and redirect those visitors to your main site. Blogs are especially good for attracting low level key phrases with long tails. Lets say your site sells Taps, perhaps you cannot fill up your site with every tap related key phrase there is as this would look too spammy. However in your blog you can target dozens and dozens of key phrases and phrases about taps, example “tap shops in london” “taps for older bathrooms” “brass tap shop in london” etc…

Even if you find blogging is not your thing it is always worth giving it a whirl, the set up can be free, quick and painless and a few weeks trying your hand at it will soon give you an idea of whether it is for you. Do remember though, it takes a while to really get the ball rolling and it may well be several months to a year before some good results from your blogging starts showing up

3 Ways to make money online.

1. Articles

2. Taking Surveys

3. Posting on Forums

Let’s begin with articles. Article content should be the number one stop for those people who frequently ask themselves, how I could make money fast. Articles requires you to write content, which in other words, content means articles.

People will pay you anywhere from $3 to $40 for your content.

The next way to make money fast is by completing surveys. There are sites that pays you to take surveys. They may pay anywhere from a dollar to possibly a hundred dollars, just for you to take a survey.

Doesn’t sound too bad now does it? The reason they pay you to complete surveys is that companies are willing to shell out loads of cash for in-depth information from their consumers to find out exactly what the word on the street is about their product or services.

If you make .80 cents per survey, it may not seem like much but do the math, over a 30 day time period. That is almost $30 extra dollars just for taking surveys.

Are you still asking yourself that question, how do I make money fast? Well if writing tons of articles and taking surveys does not excite you, there is always posting on forums opportunities.

You can make $0.10 for each post you make on a forum. This is great for those of us that would be searching and posting on forums anyway; Why not get paid for it? If you can post sixty posts in 1 hour, you can make $6, which is not that bad for earning money online.

It may not be minimum wage, but you have the advantage of being in the comfort of your own home. You can roll out of bed, and drink your juice while working on posting. Each post is generally a minimum of 12 words, which is not difficult to do at all.

You Think You Want To Make Money On The Internet?

May 23, 2009

Can you think of some really good decisions you made in your life? What about some not so good decisions? Right now you’re thinking you want to make money on the internet.

Life is ever changing and opportunities become few and in between. Doors open and we have to decide whether to step through and seize the moment or not.

When you are standing in front of that open door of opportunity the question arises “Should I do it or should I not”? You need to make a decision. How do we make decisions? This depends on a lot of things.

Suppose I said that I knew something that could change your life forever for the better. Would you be interested? Suppose I said I knew a millionaire that has built a six-figure a month business on the internet.

Suppose you could also learn how to do the same thing? Would you be interested?

What am I talking about? It’s called affiliate marketing; your own internet business on the World Wide Web or Internet if you prefer.

Affiliate marketing is an arrangement between an online merchant and affiliate, in which the affiliate earns a commission for generating sales, leads and/or clicks for the merchant’s web site.

Affiliate marketing works in a win-win situation for the merchant and the affiliate. It is very simple. The affiliate markets the merchant’s product, and the affiliate marketer benefits from each customer who clicks on the link in his website and who actually purchases the product or the service provided by the merchant.

The affiliate gets commission per sale, which can be fixed percentage or fixed amount.

The coolest thing is that some affiliate programs pay you for months to come! As an affiliate marketer you can earn a passive recurring income. You can realize $1000 or more every month deposited into your bank account.

Or, if you are someone who wants to start making five, or even six figures a year on the internet without having your own website or product, then affiliate marketing is the perfect place for you to start.

It won’t cost a single dime to join an affiliate program. And, unlike virtually every other system out there, you can start earning without investing in any paid advertising!

You can use free marketing techniques initially. Then, as you begin to start making money, you upgrade to paid marketing like pay per click advertising.

There’s no time like right now to take control of your financial future, especially during these economic times.

Stop the “should I” syndrome, and go for it! If not this, what? If not now, when? Open a door for you that could literally change your life. The only cost is your time and effort. Now you must decide!

“What if” you take time to look at affiliate marketing?

It could make all the difference.

Top 5 Tips When Choosing an Affiliate Programme

May 22, 2009

It’s so easy to get carried away with all the affiliate programmes available on the internet today. There are literally millions of affiliates to choose from. So the big question is “which one do I choose”?

In my experience, I would say that half of the affiliate programmes available are not worth your time and energy, simply because the product is not up to scratch, or the sales page for the product is very poor and will not convert enough sales.

Also, if the affiliate does not provide you with marketing tools to promote their product, like banner ads, article copy, support back up and so on, then you simply can’t promote the product in an efficient and productive way. You could always spend your time creating your own marketing tools for the product, but that could take days and cost you money.

Do not rush into signing up for every affiliate programme you see. Do your research and due diligence before committing your time, energy and money to any affiliate programme.

Affiliate Marketing Programme Tip One: The Product

Check out the affiliate product, is it a good product? Is it something people would buy? Is it worth the sale price? Research the product yourself and where ever possible try out the product. If you would prefer not to buy the product, contact the affiliate and say you are thinking of promoting their product, and can you have a sample copy. It’s always best to understand the product completely before you do any promoting.

Affiliate Marketing Programme Tip Two: The Sales Page

Spend time on the product sales page and any other marketing information provided by the affiliate. Does the sales page look professional? Is it informative? Are you convinced by the sales copy to buy the product? Does it get your juices flowing? Does it look like a high conversion sales page? Once you get a feel for the product and the way the affiliate is marketing the product, you will soon know if it is worth promoting or not.

Affiliate Marketing Programme Tip Three: The Commissions

It is normal these days to expect anything up to 75% affiliate commissions. However, it is not always advisable to go for the highest paid commissions. You still need a good product to promote. There is no point in signing up for an affiliate programme that offers 75% commissions if the product is poor, because you will not generate enough sales.

The rule of thumb here is to first do your due diligence on the product and then decide if the affiliate commissions are acceptable. You also need to be aware of when affiliate payments are made and how they are made, for example how long do you have to wait to get paid and is payment made by direct bank transfer or cheque.

Affiliate Marketing Programme Tip Four: The Marketing Tools

If you are going to be spending a large amount of your time and energy promoting an affiliate product, you will need the right marketing tools to do the job right. Normally, your affiliate will provide you with a good source of product information and tools, including good sales copy, article copy, banner ads, text ads, email copy, video tutorials, audio tutorials and even product samples.

If on the other hand your affiliate has none of these tools and you have to spend time creating them yourself, you need to decide if the programme is worth the extra work involved. If an affiliate hasn’t provided you with any marketing tools what so ever, then I would personally not peruse the programme.

You also need to track the number of visitors you are sending to the affiliate product page. It is vital to have some idea on how many sales are made per visitors. Ask the affiliate for any tracking tools available. Alternatively, there are a number of free tracking tools available online. Go to Google and type in “free tracking tools”

Affiliate Marketing Programme Tip Five: The Conversion Rate

I promoted a product which according to the affiliate was converting sales at 5%. The example he gave was simple: for every 100 visitors I send to his website via my affiliate link, 5 of the visitors would purchased the product. It sounds too good to be true, and guess what? It was. I sent 500 visitors via my affiliate link to his website and received not a single order.

At first I thought it must be my affiliate link, maybe there was a technical problem. As it turns out it wasn’t the link, it was the simple fact that the product or the sales page, was just not strong enough to return a good hit per sale ratio.

Normally, if I send 300 visitors to an affiliate sales page and no sales are made, I would look again at the product and the way the product was promoted. I would never simply continue sending visitors if no sales were being made. The least you need to do is change the sales copy and keep testing out new promotional methods.

Always do your own testing and don’t take what the affiliate says as gospel. If you have driven 200 – 400 visitors to an affiliate sales page and no sales have been made, you must decide if the programme is worth perusing.

Are You Using the Right Pay Per Click Keywords?

May 22, 2009

If you are using Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising to market your online business, then you must know that having the right keywords is of the utmost importance. Your choice of keywords can make or break your attempt to use PPC advertising to market your business. The first thing to do is determine exactly what keywords provide accurate descriptions of your business. Simply have a brainstorming session where you put down everything that comes to mind about your business. In a few days, go through this list again and try to eliminate those words that do not truly reflect the heart and soul of your business. In all likelihood, you will be able to eliminate most of them as either being too general or not quite descriptive enough.

Some people believe that the best way to make use of PPC advertising is to have as many keywords as possible, some of which are expensive and some of which are cheap, so that eventually your average cost is somewhere in between. The problem with this approach, however, is that most of these keywords will have little or relevance to your site, and you will therefore be wasting your time and money. True enough, you will experience an increase in traffic to your site. The amount of sales you make, however, are not likely to increase by very much, if at all. The keywords you use must truly and accurately describe your business, so that people who still choose to visit your site are actively looking for what you have to offer them.

Some websites are seemingly best described by terms that are extremely general in nature, such as ‘home business’ or ‘work at home’ and others along those lines. The cost of using such keywords in PPC advertising campaigns is most likely going to be prohibitive, as these will be highly contested keywords that many other people also want to use. It is much more cost effective for you to choose keywords that may be searched for less frequently but are much cheaper. That said, a keyword is only truly expensive if it costs more to maintain that keyword than the value of the revenue that the keyword brings in. A keyword could cost $10, but if it brings in $20 in revenue per click, then you can hardly call it expensive.

The cost of keywords is directly related to their positioning in the search results of the various web search engines. People who compete over the same keyword offer bids to determine the positions of their keywords. The highest bidder for a keyword will have their advertisement placed at the very top of the search results list, on the very first page. This is not where you want your advertisement to be, however, as the first three pay per click advertisements generally suffer many accidental clicks. You should try to position your keyword such that it is on the first page of results but just behind the first three advertisements. This way, you maximize interested traffic while reducing the number of accidental clicks that will simply waste your money.

PPC advertising can be a major boon to your growing online business. There is nothing simpler than sitting down, drawing up a list of keywords for your business, listing them with one or more major PPC programs, and immediately experience a rise in traffic volumes to your site. While the success of your online business is determined by a variety of factors, the fact remains that using the right keywords in your PPC advertising campaign could be one of the major factors that leads to your business becoming an online success story.

The Pros and Cons of PPC Advertising

May 22, 2009

Pay per click advertising is extremely popular among online businesses, and many swear by it. It involves using specific keywords to direct interested traffic to your website. You simply register your keywords with a pay per click provider, and they appear in the form of an advertisement that people can click on to link to your website. You are then charged every time someone clicks on your advertisement and is linked to your site.

There are many things you must take note of when designing your pay per click advertising campaign. Some of them are listed below.

1. Relevance is everything. People click on keywords expecting to arrive at a site that is or has whatever was promised in the advertisement they clicked on. It is no point directing people to your site only to have disappointed that it is not what they expected and simply leave. You pay for the click but get nothing out of it.

2. Check keywords you wish to use using search engines yourself. The sites that come up may give you a better idea of whether that is a good keyword for your site or not.

3. Negative keywords can be useful. Most pay per click programs allow you to set negative keywords such that, when people enter such keywords, your site is prevented from being listed, even if the person also entered relevant keywords.

4. You can budget your campaign by putting a cap on the maximum number of clicks you want to allow each day. If you are just starting out with pay per click advertising, then it is advisable for you to start small and set a small budget until you are more familiar with pay per click programs and how they work.

5. Most pay per click providers will require that you keep some kind of balance on account in order to satisfy your daily budget. Most require either a minimum deposit or a refill amount that is 3 times your daily budget.

6. You can choose to pause your campaign at any time. If you will not have the time to monitor your account for a certain period of time, then you can pause your account and not spend any money on pay per click advertising during that time. Once you return you can resume your advertising.

7. Most pay per click providers require that you adhere to a set of rules and regulations in order to use their services. You should read through the rules before you submit your keywords and keep to them. This could save you the frustration of having your keywords and advertisements rejected by the pay per click providers.

8. You should constantly monitor the number of clicks your advertisements are getting and from where. You will want to continue bidding on those keywords that bring traffic to your site that is being converted into sales. If your keywords are effective but highly contested and thus expensive, then you will have to come up with derivatives that are less expensive but just as effective.

9. Be patient with your advertising campaign. Many pay per click programs are happy to offer you help, and you should contact them and listen to what they have to say about your campaign before you declare your campaign a failure.

10. When someone searches for your keyword, he or she is going to get a long list of sites that match. You need to be among the first that appear, as those further behind rarely get any attention. While it is not necessary for your site to appear on the first page, you should not be too far behind, or you will find your site fading into obscurity very quickly.
